Today we are down big from some Greece worries. Investors/traders/almost everyone was looking for a reason to sell and they did. Were things getting a bit frothy? Possibly. Were we breaking an up trendline to the downside? Answer definitely yes. So what can we look forward to these next few days. Well? Tomorrow we have the ADP report, the initial report prior to our jobless claims (market mover) and our UE report (big market mover) on Friday.
As an investor, I’m waiting to see where the buying will occur. There is no reason to step in here? Sure you can nibble and start building positions, but why not wait to see if there are buying at more technically inclined levels of 1300 SPX or 1270 SPX. So I’ve been building a buy list and just waiting to execute on these buys.
Yesterday, we moved down on China news because overnight they came out saying they were going to grow only at 7.5%. Material stocks have been acting badly prior to yesterday’s news. But yesterday they came out and confirmed it. We know growth in China is slowing down, the question is by how much. During the 2008 boom they put too much money into the economy and now they are starting to scale back. 7.5% GDP compared to our 2-3%?
I still like basic materials, because it is still a cheap source of energy in coal and I still like names like FCX and AA down here. The question is how much time do you have to wait? These are not trades these are long term-wait them out type investments. I’m not looking to step in front of the freight train here, but there is absolutely no one on the street that likes coal names which draws my attention for more research. Although wall street firms like Consol Energy, but I digress.
All in all, wait and see, don’t jump the gun. Watch the market, do your research, and find buy points where the stars align.
